Temple
About

Located in a quiet residential area of northern Matsuyama, this temple is known for its Muromachi-period eight-legged gate, designated an Important Cultural Property of Ehime Prefecture. The dragon carvings on the main hall and copper votive plates dated 1650 are among the oldest materials bearing the word “henro” (pilgrim). Hidden Christian stone lanterns also remain, reflecting layered histories of faith.

Johannes comment

Last temple of the Matsuyama stretch; calm and reflective. Noted for preserving the oldest known bronze name slip in the pilgrimage tradition; once a large complex but repeatedly destroyed in medieval conflicts. From here begins a long, mentally challenging but rewarding coastal walk toward Imabari; notable tsuyadō exists near a petroleum facility along that stretch.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
