Temple
About

One of the most demanding mountain temples, located on the northern slopes of Mt. Ishizuchi, western Japan’s highest peak. Traditionally reached by steep mountain paths, it embodies ascetic mountain worship. The main hall resembles a Shinto shrine, reflecting the fusion of Buddhism and mountain kami worship. The surrounding “Forest of Stars” offers majestic natural scenery that deepens the spiritual atmosphere.

Johannes comment

Mountain temple (~750 m) with one of the best nature loop approaches of the pilgrimage. Gradual staged ascent, possible bus/car access in season. Large enclosed rest hut. Okuno-in ~300m up the hill with torii view toward Mount Ishizuchi. Stunning western forest approach with creeks and red shrine torii row.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
