Temple
About

A dramatic ocean-view temple on the heights of Gyōtō-misaki (near Muroto), beloved locally as “Nishi-dera.” Beyond the Niō Gate, a graceful wooden main hall appears. The west-facing Daishi Hall connects to the “Tengu Debate” legend, and a nearby large cauldron is said to “multiply wishes.” Sea, mountains, and folklore blend into a serene sacred ground.

Johannes comment

Powerful, heavy-feeling temple reached via an inland detour from T25, then back to the coast. Michi-no-eki on return to the coast. Don’t miss the coastal Fudō-dō Okuno-in, historically used for women’s worship when access to the main temple was restricted; interesting combined history sites.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
