Temple
About

A historic temple in central Matsuyama, within walking distance from Dōgo Onsen. The powerful Niō guardian statues at the National Treasure gate are striking, while the main hall (rebuilt in 1318) and the Important Cultural Property three-storied pagoda are also highlights. At the back of the grounds, the “Mantra Cave” stretches about 160 meters, offering a quiet, contemplative space. The temple is also associated with the legend of Emon Saburō.

Johannes comment

Large, highly touristic ‘themepark-like’ temple (in a good way), about 1 km from Dōgo Onsen. Multi-story pagoda, many halls/gardens, treasure hall, shops, and a wish-making stone ring you can crawl through; view of the big Kōbō Daishi statue on the hill behind. Don’t miss the walking tunnel through the hill behind the temple—exiting it can continue you on the route; scenic back-route option toward Dōgo and the atmospheric Matsuyama Youth hostel.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
