Temple
About

A major mountain temple near the summit of Mt. Tairyū-ji in Anan, Tokushima—often called the “Western Kōyasan.” A powerful gate appears after rugged approaches; the main hall and Daishi Hall are Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. Nearby is Shashin-ga-dake, where Kōbō Daishi trained, and the long ropeway offers unforgettable views. A special place of prayer and self-confrontation.

Johannes comment

For many pilgrims, a major highlight: vast forested mountain grounds with an impressive main hall and Daishidō. Cable car exists but is awkward for walking pilgrims unless planned well—the station is on the opposite side of the usual approach and the descent leads away from the direct route to T22. Multiple beautiful forest paths descend toward T22; Cable-car base area has a michi-no-eki and minshuku.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
