Temple
About

The highest of the 88 temples at 911 meters above sea level. Once a formidable mountain ascent, it is now accessible by ropeway. Life-size Rakan statues line the grounds. The principal image is said to have been carved by Kūkai, and the whimsical “Eggplant Seat” (Otanomi Nasu) is a popular charm. Dramatic scenery rewards pilgrims with a sense of achievement.

Johannes comment

Highest temple (>900 m), vast grounds, observatory, tsuyadō (closed winter), ropeway access. Marks transition from Ehime into Kagawa (‘Nirvana’). Multiple walking approaches; snow visit possible. Bekkaku 14 on the way and major 2-day detour to Bekkaku 15 (Hashikura-ji) highly recommended.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
