Temple
About

A mountain temple in the Kuma Highlands near Mt. Ishizuchi. Along the approach, ancient trees lead to a Niō Gate and a giant straw sandal display. The copper-roofed main hall stands out against deep green forest. Two bell towers sit within the grounds, and prayers for peace are also part of the living tradition. After difficult roads, the temple’s silence becomes a true milestone.

Johannes comment

High mountain temple on the Kumakōgen plateau (cooler climate), with a long but scenic approach from Temple 43. Traditional halfway point (44/88), set in ancient forest with a memorable gate and revered healing Kannon statue. Strongly recommended to stay in Kumakōgen and use it as a base to visit Temple 45 (walk or public transport). Entrance pilgrim shop may be closed/uncertain.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
