No.45 Kaigan-zan Iwayaji
A secluded training temple deep in the Kuma mountains. From the parking area, a steep climb of about 20 minutes feels like a genuine trial. A highlight is the unique structure that incorporates massive boulders behind it—almost “the whole mountain is the main hall.” After the stern practice ground and rock-split paths, expansive views of the Ishizuchi range reward you with strong accomplishment.
I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.

Often a top highlight; one of the few temples with Fudō Myōō as main deity. No direct car access to the temple, the final ~600 m steep approach must be walked. Two standout okuno-in: a ladder-access meditation cave right by the Daishidō with great views, and the chain-climb Hakusan Gyōjō okuno-in (requires notice/keys from the temple). Alternative route from Kumakōgen can pass the chain okuno-in first and includes eerie Fudō statue spots; mountain setting (~560 m) can see early snow.
