Temple
About

A coastal guardian temple at the eastern tip of the Yokonami Peninsula. Past the Niō Gate, 170 stone steps ascend, with a vermilion three-story pagoda adding bright color along the way. The principal image is Namikiri Fudō Myōō, said to part rough seas. Revered for maritime safety and abundant catches, it cleanses mind and body with sweeping Pacific views.

Johannes comment

Rare Fudō Myōō-focused temple (main deity and okuno-in). Steep approach; pilgrims pass through Usa town and can take a steep nature-trail hill with great ocean views. Good pilgrimage-friendly onsen hotel nearby; donated pilgrim gear may be available for free. Okuno-in is close by (but longer to walk). Onward options: peninsula road (often boring/no ocean views), official inland ‘fjord’ route (culturally interesting but feels long), or a small ferry across the saltwater lake if operating (recommended—check schedule). Long onward walk toward Suzaki.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
