Temple
About

A centrally located urban temple in Imabari. Its gate is guarded by the Four Heavenly Kings, an unusual and impressive sight. The principal image is Dai-tsū Chishō Nyorai, enshrined here uniquely among the 88 temples. The Daishidō hall survived wartime air raids, and the temple’s historical ties with Ōyamazumi Shrine reflect Japan’s tradition of syncretic Shinto-Buddhist worship.

Johannes comment

Urban Imabari detour: located in the city center (near Imabari Castle area) and requires going into and out of town. Grounds feel unusually open to the street and can feel scattered; close shrine nearby. Unique among the 88: the name alone retains the “-bō” suffix, reflecting origins as a monastic hall; historic sea-faith / safe-passage resonance.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
