No.88 Iōzan Henjōkōin Okuboji

Temple
About

The concluding temple of the pilgrimage, set on the slopes of Mt. Yahazu. Passing through the Two-Deva Gate and Niō Gate leads to the unique main hall complex. Beneath the Daishidō lies the “Sand-Treading Hall,” while the Staff Hall displays walking staffs left by pilgrims. Standing here, many feel the quiet fulfillment of the entire 88-temple journey.

Johannes comment

Finish line with strong, celebratory energy. Multiple approaches: full mountain korogashi (700+ m, most rewarding), road, or public transport. Mountain entry often brings you in from the back—seek the grand main gate near the Daishidō. Don’t miss the glass display of hundreds of abandoned walking staffs. Completion calligraphy certificate available at the office. Stay tip: Minshuku Yasokubo (legendary) to experience dawn/dusk quietly on the grounds. If time, consider walking back toward Temple 1 to close the loop (several route options, also via T10).

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
