No.38 Sadazan Fudarakuin Kongofukuji

Temple
About

A major milestone near Cape Ashizuri—often called the “hardest” after the long stretch from Iwamoto-ji (about 95 km). The gate bears the inscription “Fudaraku East Gate,” honoring the belief that this is closest to Kannon’s Pure Land. A Tahōtō pagoda and a subtropical garden welcome you. With Pacific panoramas, the temple lets you feel the achievement of a long, demanding approach.

Johannes comment

Reached after the longest remote approach (~80 km) from Temple 37—plan food and lodging carefully. Cape Ashizuri area feels like a ‘lost world’ and is a major natural/energetic highlight; strongly recommended to stay and explore (not just overnight). Temple grounds feature massive stone landscaping and increasing wheelchair accessibility; loop behind main hall with hundreds of Buddha statues. Surroundings: trail network, lighthouse, viewpoints, and dramatic Hakusan cave with a famous footbath above it; lodging options include onsens, minshuku, and henro houses.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
