No.24 Murotozan Myōjōin Hotsumisakiji

Temple
About

A spectacular temple on the heights of Cape Muroto, overlooking the Pacific. Nearby Mikurodo Cave is revered as the site of Kōbō Daishi’s youthful training. The gate features a rare arrangement of four Niō figures (front and back). The principal image is Kokūzō Bosatsu, associated with academic success. The “Bell Stone,” which rings clearly when struck with pebbles, is a well-loved curiosity. Sea and sky frame a living memory of ascetic practice.

Johannes comment

Reached after oon of the longest gap so far (~80 km) from T23—paved but deeply scenic and meditative along the coast (don’t skip if you can). Highlights include small temple spots, Rider’s Paradise, and the DMV (dual-mode bus/train) to abbreviate sections; Minami coastline off the main road is recommended. First Murōto Cape temple and a good overnight base; nearby caves are linked to Kūkai choosing his name and marked by a large white statue.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
