Temple
About

A sea-facing sacred place on high ground in Nankoku City (Kōchi), long revered by fishermen and sailors for maritime safety. The gate houses an Important Cultural Property pair of Kongō Rikishi (Niō), and the Eleven-Faced Kannon is said to be carved by Kōbō Daishi. Uplifted rock formations dot the precincts, creating an open, natural beauty where ocean and prayer meet.

Johannes comment

Beautiful coastal hill temple with friendly atmosphere and sweeping views of the upcoming coastal route; cruise ships are sometimes visible. Historically tied to sailors/fishermen praying for safe passage—guardian-of-the-sea feel. Emergency sleep in parking garage may be possible but is not an official tsuyadō.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
