No.15 Yakōzan Konjikinin Awa Kokubunji

Temple
About

A small temple in a quiet Tokushima City neighborhood. Enormous foundation stones mark the former site of a Nara-period seven-story pagoda, lending deep historical weight. Highlights include the multi-layered irimoya main hall, a rebuilt Daishi Hall, and a nationally designated scenic stone garden. It is the only temple in the 88 associated with Sōtō Zen Buddhism, offering a distinctly Zen sense of stillness.

Johannes comment

First Kokubun-ji (provincial temple) in Tokushima (Awa). Can feel disappointing compared to expectations of a ‘state temple,’ but invites close attention to details—especially roof structures and the carefully manicured garden.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
