No.46 Iōzan Yōjuin Joruriji
A gentle temple in the rural outskirts of Matsuyama. The Yakushi Nyorai is revered for healing and long life. At the center stands a roughly 1,000-year-old juniper (ibuki byakushin), protected as a natural monument. A torii beyond the grounds, a one-wish Benzaiten hall, and Buddha-footprint stones create a landscape of sacred rocks. As Matsuyama’s first temple on the route, it softly rebalances body and mind.
I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.

Start of the Matsuyama temple stretch (46–53). Cozy ‘palm tree’ feel after descending from the Kuma Kōgen plateau into the warmer Matsuyama valley; palm trees on the grounds. Large minshuku directly opposite the entrance can host bus groups but also works for solo pilgrims.
