No.10 Tokudōzan Kanjōin Kirihataji

Temple
About

On the mid-slope of Mt. Kirihata in Awa, Tokushima (about 155 m elevation). The approach includes 333 stone steps, with separate “misfortune-removing slopes” traditionally associated with men and women. The main hall enshrines Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara). Highlights include a nationally designated Important Cultural Property two-story pagoda and the local weaving-maiden legend, plus sweeping views toward the Yoshino River and Shikoku Mountains.

Johannes comment

Very steep and long approach to the main hall; demanding in heat or at day’s end. Inner sanctuary lies further uphill by steep stairs and is worth the climb. Buy proper gear at the English‑speaking shop “Sumotoriya” on the approach rather than at Temple 1.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
