About

In Naruto, Tokushima—this is the classic starting point of the 1,200 km Shikoku pilgrimage. A massive gate and guardian statues welcome you; inside the main hall, countless hanging lanterns create an almost otherworldly glow. The Daishi Hall seems to float on a pond, and a quietly dignified Tahōtō pagoda (built about 600 years ago) still stands. A special place to reset your mind and begin with calm.

Johannes comment

Visit the Fudō Myōō hall on the left before the main hall (many pilgrims miss it). Buy proper gear and choose a beautiful nokyōchō you want to keep for years. Walk to Temple 2 via the Henro House to avoid the busy road and consider spending the previous day in the area to acclimate.

Who is Johannes?

I like to travel, and whenever I have time, I walk all over the place. He is particularly knowledgeable about the Shikoku Pilgrimage and enjoys talking about the temples and the journey. I like talking to people and value encounters.
